When Art and Drama Collide: Y5 Puppet Performance

18th March 2024

Over the course of this year, Year 5 children have been designing and making marionettes, using drawing skills, clay, painting, wood and textiles in the process. And last week, all their hard work came together with performances for parents and pupils.

In the ever-evolving landscape of entertainment, where CGI and high-definition screens dominate our visual experiences, there exists an age-old art form that continues to captivate and charm audiences in equal measure: puppetry. From ancient civilizations to modern theatres, puppetry has remained a timeless skill that transcends generations, weaving stories through the delicate movements of intricately crafted characters.

The Y5 performance, titled “Professors Blue” by Taryn Butler, explores themes related to lifestyle choices and ocean pollution. Serving as a powerful educational tool, through the art of puppetry, complex themes and lessons can be conveyed in a way that is accessible and engaging, sparking meaningful conversations and fostering a deeper appreciation for the arts.
