St Margarets School Alumna Amy receiving A-level results July 2020

Catching Up : Amy

30th April 2021

Amy left St Margaret's in 2020, we caught up with her one year on…

“I was extremely quiet in Year 11; I was the silent one at the back of the classroom. That changed in Sixth Form, and that has changed even more since I arrived at Cambridge. A lot of the staff at St Margaret’s played a significant role, but St Margaret’s did it, St Margaret’s definitely made me a more confident person”

Amy was the Editor of the School magazine, The Crown, and she fondly recalls how this was a great learning curve: “When I was editing The Crown, I learnt a lot about myself; I didn’t realise that I was capable of leading such a large group of people, but I also found that I really, really enjoyed it. It was my first experience in a leadership role.”

The opportunity enabled her to understand the importance of time-keeping and setting deadlines, however her current role at Varsity has additional responsibilities, “ The biggest difference between my previous role at St Margaret’s and here at Varsity is that I also manage the print element. It’s a paper with 30-36 pages and news gets 8 or 9 pages, so we have the opportunity to cover big stories and are constantly receiving press releases.”

Amy is under no illusion that getting to Cambridge required a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work but feels that one has to be “in love” with their subject in order to succeed, “I do put the reason down to why I am here at Cambridge due to the fact that I put in a lot of work for my A-levels, and the skills I built through that.”

“The number one thing that gets you here is passion. Passion will lead you to work really hard in your A-Levels and put in the ground work. The work you do for your A- levels is the foundation for your success in your university applications, and your degree”

Her experience of being at Cambridge has been “amazing so far” as well as busy and exciting. Aside from Varsity and her degree, Amy also attends eight hours a week of choir.

“ I absolutely love my degree! I’ve met so many incredible and inspiring people both in the staff and students. Everyone here at this University is absolutely incredible. I still cannot believe that I am lucky enough to be here.”
