From Sea to Stage: Bringing The Little Mermaid to Life

13th June 2025

Tonight, our Year 6 Junior School pupils will take to the stage to perform The Little Mermaid, a magical undersea adventure full of music, colour, and imagination. But the production is more than just a show—it’s an opportunity for our youngest performers to stretch creative muscles, build confidence and forge friendships.

This production of The Little Mermaid—inspired by Disney’s beloved adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale—has been designed entirely in-house. From the choreography to costume design, from props to voice coaching, everything has been created by our dedicated students and staff. For our Year 6 pupils, this is more than a one-night-only performance. It’s an immersive learning journey. Through weeks of rehearsal, they’ve explored the essential building blocks of stagecraft—acting, dancing, voice projection, and musical timing—developing not just technical skills, but confidence, discipline, and resilience.

Being part of a production helps students grow in ways that traditional classrooms can’t always offer. As with West Side Story, where our Senior School pupils reflected on gaining new friendships, discovering passions, and learning to balance multiple creative demands, our Junior School cast have taken their first steps into a similar environment—one that values collaboration, expression, and creativity.

Under the direction of our Head of Drama, Mrs Montalvan, and the production team, each cast member has stepped into their role with energy and professionalism—from Iona as the curious Ariel, and Tom as the charming Prince Eric, to Rachel as the illustrious Sebastian and Lara’s commanding performance as Ursula. The ensemble cast—including our Mersisters, Seagulls, Chefs, and Sea Chorus—add a joy and vitality to every scene and song, from Under the Sea to Poor Unfortunate Souls.

Being part of a Junior School production is a valuable introduction to the wider drama programme at St Margaret’s. With opportunities to move from Junior School productions to full-scale Senior School performances, tonight is another stepping stone into what we hope will be a lifelong love of the performing arts for many of our pupils.

Thank you to all of the teachers, backstage crew, and our families for your support. We invite you to enjoy our photo gallery—a celebration of the creativity, collaboration, and vibrant community spirit that lie at the heart of drama at St Margaret’s.
